Is Grown Alchemist Cruelty-Free?

🐰 Grown Alchemist is a *cruelty-free brand. None of Grown Alchemist’s ingredients or products are tested on animals. Grown Alchemist has met all the criteria in our Cruelty-Free Checklist and is included in our Cruelty-Free Directory.

Does Grown Alchemist Test on Animals?

When asking, does Grown Alchemist test on animals? We must look beyond to ensure none of Grown Alchemist’s ingredients or suppliers test on animals. And they don’t sell in any country or under conditions that may require animal testing by law.

In our research, we discovered the following:

  • ✓ Grown Alchemist confirmed they do not test their products or ingredients on animals or ask others to test on their behalf.
  • ✓ Grown Alchemist confirmed all their ingredient suppliers do not test on animals
  • ✓ Grown Alchemist confirmed they do not allow or sell their products under conditions where animal testing is required by law

By meeting all of our Cruelty-Free Criteria, Grown Alchemist is a *cruelty-free brand by our standards.

*Grown Alchemist is owned by L’Occitane, a corporation that is NOT cruelty-free because they allow some of their other brands to test on animals.

The decision is yours whether you want to support or boycott cruelty-free brands owned by a parent company that is not cruelty-free. There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer to this. Do what you’re comfortable with. I just thought it was important to disclose that L’Occitane owns Grown Alchemist.

What About China’s Animal Testing Laws?

Grown Alchemist has confirmed they only sell their products online in China and do not sell their products in retail stores in mainland China; therefore, they are not required to test on animals.

“As you may be aware, the cosmetic regulations in China currently require that any finished product retailed inside China is required to undergo compulsory safety testing which is completed on animals. Because of this we only sell cross border into China which doesn’t require animal testing.”

With the current changes to China’s animal testing laws, some cosmetics sold in China can be exempt from animal testing under certain conditions. However, without meeting those conditions, animal testing is still legally required for most cosmetics sold in China in 2023.

Is Grown Alchemist Certified Cruelty-Free?

Grown Alchemist is certified cruelty-free by PETA, but NOT Leaping Bunny certified.

Cruelty-Free Policies 2023

Just because a brand claims it is ‘Cruelty-Free,’ doesn’t always mean that’s the case.

That’s because there is no legal definition for the label ‘Cruelty-Free.’ It can mean different things to different people. But Cruelty-Free is generally used to imply no animal testing. More specifically, the ingredients, formulation, or finished product are not tested on animals at any stage of product development.

At ethical elephant, we always assess a company’s cruelty-free policy using our Cruelty-Free Checklist. This ensures no animal testing was performed by the brand itself, its suppliers, or any third parties.

How We Assess Cruelty-Free Policies

Since 2015, the start of my blog, I’ve been emailing companies asking about their animal testing policies and cruelty-free commitments.

And based on the responses I receive from companies, I’ll research to find any supporting facts needed before concluding whether the brand should be classified as “Cruelty-Free,” “Animal-Tested,” or “Grey Area – Unclear Policies.”

☕ Every week, I continue to reach out to new brands while trying my best to keep current brands updated. If you found any of my posts or guides helpful, consider Buying Me A Coffee! I would greatly appreciate it! ❤

What about Vegan?

Just because something is called Cruelty-Free, doesn’t always mean it’s Vegan. And vice versa.

Cruelty-Free only refers to no animal testing, while Vegan means formulated without animal products.

Some brands are Cruelty-Free, but not Vegan.

And some are Vegan, but not Cruelty-Free.

Another important distinction to know is, Vegan in cosmetics can refer to an entire brand is 100% Vegan or a specific product is Vegan.

Is Grown Alchemist Vegan?

⭐ Grown Alchemist is NOT an entirely vegan brand. But Grown Alchemist offers some vegan options that are free of animal products.

How to know which of Grown Alchemist products are vegan?

Grown Alchemist claims most of their products are vegan except for their lip balm products which contain beeswax.

The following is a snippet of the email response I received from Grown Alchemist when I asked if all their products are vegan:

“The majority of our range is vegan however there is bees wax in our lip balm products.”

Where to buy Grown Alchemist? Check out grownalchemist.com, Amazon, Ulta, and Sephora!

Vegan Policies

Similar to ‘Cruelty-Free,’ there is no standard or legal definition for the label ‘Vegan.’ But Vegan is generally used to mean formulated without animal-derived ingredients or animal by-products.

Some common animal products in cosmetics include carmine, lanolin, snail mucus, beeswax, honey, pearl or silk-derived ingredients, animal-based glycerin, keratin, and squalene.

There are plant-based and synthetic alternatives to animal-derived ingredients. But unless a brand explicitly labels its ingredients or product as Vegan, it’s often difficult to know with certainty whether a product is vegan just by reading the ingredient list.

So it’s best to ask the company and manufacturers to ensure the ingredients they chose were from non-animal sources.

Where are Grown Alchemist’s products made?

Grown Alchemist states on its website,

Are the products made locally? Are all ingredients grown locally?
All our products are manufactured in Australia and we always try and source ingredients locally whenever possible.”

I hope this article helped you to understand Grown Alchemist’s cruelty-free and vegan status and by choosing cruelty-free together, we can help end animal testing for cosmetics once and for all!

Ethical Mica Mining Policy

Mica is a mineral used in cosmetics to add a shimmery effect. But the mining of natural mica has been linked to child labor and human rights violations.

Unless the company discloses its mica mining policy, we have no way of knowing whether its mica is ethically sourced without child or forced labor.

So I asked L’ANZA if their mica is ethically sourced without the use of child labor and they responded by stating,

“Two L’ANZA products contain mica:
– Keratin Healing Oil Intensive Hair Masque
– Healing Volume Zero Weight Gel

Please know there are hundreds of mica mines globally and L’ANZA is extremely particular where our mica is sourced. It L’ANZA’s policy not to disclose data or divulge information of our ingredient and formula sources as this is proprietary and confidential. So, I apologize that I cannot disclose our sources.

However, L’ANZA is a cruelty-free company for both animals and humans and it’s our strict policy that all ingredients be ethically sourced without child labor. We have contractual agreements with our mica suppliers to ensure that they adhere to our cruelty-free, humane, and child labor law policies. Internally, we conduct inspections and routine audits to verify this.”

You can find Urban Hydration cruelty-free products at Target, Ulta, and on Amazon.

Is Urban Hydration Cruelty-Free?

Urban Hydration is a cruelty-free brand. Urban Hydration has confirmed they do not test their products or ingredients on animals or ask others to test on their behalf. Their suppliers also do not test on animals, nor do they allow their products to be tested on animals when required by law. And finally, their products are not sold in stores in mainland China or any other country that may require animal testing.

By our standards, we would consider Urban Hydration to be Cruelty-Free.

Below is a screenshot of what’s currently stated on Urban Hydration’s website about its animal testing policy:

What About China’s Animal Testing Laws?

Urban Hydration has confirmed they do not sell their products in retail stores in mainland China; therefore, they are not required to test on animals.

As of May 1, 2021, some imported ordinary cosmetics can be exempt from animal testing under certain conditions. However, for the most part, animal testing is still legally required for most imported cosmetics in 2022.

Cruelty-Free Policies

Note that there is no legal definition for the label ‘Cruelty-Free.’ It can mean different things to different people.

Also, note that Cruelty-Free and Vegan don’t always mean the same thing.

Is Urban Hydration Vegan?

‘Vegan’ in cosmetics can refer to an entire brand that is 100% Vegan or a specific product is vegan.

In the case of Urban Hydration, not all of their products are vegan. But they have some products that are suitable for vegans.

How to know which of Urban Hydration’s products are vegan?

Below is a snippet of the email response I received from Urban Hydration when I asked if all of their products are vegan:

“Everything is vegan except for the honey products.”

Vegan Policies

Similar to ‘Cruelty-Free,’ there is no standard or legal definition for the label ‘Vegan.’ But it usually means no animal-derived ingredients or animal by-products.

Some common animal products used in cosmetics include carmine, lanolin, snail mucus, beeswax, honey, pearl or silk-derived ingredients, animal-based glycerin, keratin, and squalene.

There are plant-based and synthetic alternatives to animal-derived ingredients. But it’s sometimes difficult to know with certainty whether a product is vegan just by reading the ingredient list.

So it’s best to ask the company and manufacturers to ensure the ingredients they’ve chosen to use were from non-animal sources.

Is r.e.m. beauty Cruelty-Free?

🐰 r.e.m. beauty is a cruelty-free brand. None of r.e.m. beauty’s ingredients or products are tested on animals. r.e.m. beauty has met all the criteria in our Cruelty-Free Checklist and is included in our Cruelty-Free Directory.

Does r.e.m. beauty Test on Animals?

When asking, does r.e.m. beauty test on animals? We must look beyond to ensure none of r.e.m. beauty’s ingredients or suppliers test on animals. And they don’t sell in any country or under conditions that may require animal testing by law.

In our research, we discovered the following:

  • ✓ r.e.m. beauty confirmed they do not test their products or ingredients on animals or ask others to test on their behalf.
  • ✓ r.e.m. beauty confirmed all their ingredient suppliers do not test on animals
  • ✓ r.e.m. beauty confirmed they do not allow or sell their products under conditions where animal testing is required by law

By meeting all of our Cruelty-Free Criteria, r.e.m. beauty is a truly cruelty-free brand by our standards.

What is r.e.m. beauty’s Animal Testing Policy?

Below is a screenshot of what’s currently stated on rem beauty’s website about its animal testing policy:

What About China’s Animal Testing Laws?

r.e.m. beauty has confirmed they do not sell their products in retail stores in mainland China; therefore, they are not required to test on animals.

“additionally, there are no rem products sold in china.”

With the current changes to China’s animal testing laws, some cosmetics sold in China can be exempt from animal testing under certain conditions. However, without meeting those conditions, animal testing is still legally required for most cosmetics sold in China in 2023.

Is r.e.m. beauty Certified Cruelty-Free?

r.e.m. beauty is not certified by a third-party cruelty-free accreditation like Leaping Bunny or PETA.

Although r.e.m. beauty is not certified cruelty-free, the company has confirmed to us it is a truly cruelty-free brand by meeting all the criteria in our Cruelty-Free Checklist.

Note that companies can remain to be cruelty-free without an official cruelty-free certification. Some companies may choose not to be certified cruelty-free because of cost, privacy, or lack of resources.

Is r.e.m. beauty Vegan?

⭐ r.e.m. beauty is a 100% vegan brand. All their products are vegan, and are formulated without any animal-derived ingredients or by-products.

The following is a screenshot of what’s currently stated on r.e.m. beauty’s website about its vegan claims:

Where are r.e.m. beauty’s products made?

r.e.m. beauty states on its website:

where are your products manufactured?
our products are manufactured under the highest of standards in the u.s., italy, indonesia and korea. for more details, check each product page on rembeauty.com or the product packaging.”

Ethical Mica Mining Policy

Mica is a mineral that’s used in cosmetics to add a shimmery effect. But the mining of natural mica has been linked to child labor and human rights violations.

Unless the company discloses its mica mining policy, we have no way of knowing whether its mica is ethically sourced without child or forced labor.

So I asked r.e.m. beauty if their mica is ethically sourced without the use of child labor and they responded by stating,

“r.e.m. beauty takes a very strong stand against child labor—and forced labor of any kind. all of our cosmetic suppliers are required to sign an r.e.m. beauty code of conduct which explicitly prohibits forced labor in the manufacture, contracting, or subcontracting of products. we also conduct third-party audits to ensure our suppliers are in compliance with our code of conduct.”

I hope this article helped you to understand r.e.m. beauty’s cruelty-free and vegan status and by choosing cruelty-free together, we can help end animal testing for cosmetics once and for all!
