Does J.R. Watkins Test on Animals?

When asking, does J.R. Watkins test on animals? We must look beyond to ensure none of J.R. Watkins’ ingredients or suppliers test on animals. And they don’t sell in any country or under conditions that may require animal testing by law.

In our research, we discovered the following:

  • ✓ J.R. Watkins confirmed all their ingredient suppliers do not test on animals
  • ✓ J.R. Watkins confirmed they do not allow or sell their products under conditions where animal testing is required by law

By meeting all of our Cruelty-Free Criteria, J.R. Watkins is a truly cruelty-free brand by our standards.

What is J.R. Watkins’ Animal Testing Policy?

Below is a screenshot of what’s currently stated on J.R. Watkins’ website about its animal testing policy:

Is J.R. Watkins Certified Cruelty-Free?

J.R. Watkins is certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny and PETA.

Cruelty-Free Policies 2023

Just because a brand claims it is ‘Cruelty-Free,’ doesn’t always mean that’s the case.

That’s because there is no legal definition for the label ‘Cruelty-Free.’ It can mean different things to different people. But Cruelty-Free is generally used to imply no animal testing. More specifically, the ingredients, formulation, or finished product are not tested on animals at any stage of product development.

At ethical elephant, we always assess a company’s cruelty-free policy using our Cruelty-Free Checklist. This ensures no animal testing was performed by the brand itself, its suppliers, or any third parties.

How We Assess Cruelty-Free Policies

Since 2015, the start of my blog, I’ve been emailing companies asking about their animal testing policies and cruelty-free commitments.

And based on the responses I receive from companies, I’ll research to find any supporting facts needed before concluding whether the brand should be classified as “Cruelty-Free,” “Animal-Tested,” or “Grey Area – Unclear Policies.”

☕ Every week, I continue to reach out to new brands while trying my best to keep current brands updated. If you found any of my posts or guides helpful, consider Buying Me A Coffee! I would greatly appreciate it! ❤

What about Vegan?

Just because something is called Cruelty-Free, doesn’t always mean it’s Vegan. And vice versa.

Cruelty-Free only refers to no animal testing, while Vegan means formulated without animal products.

Some brands are Cruelty-Free, but not Vegan.

And some are Vegan, but not Cruelty-Free.

Another important distinction to know is, Vegan in cosmetics can refer to an entire brand is 100% Vegan or a specific product is Vegan.

Is J.R. Watkins Vegan?

⭐ J.R. Watkins is NOT an entirely vegan brand. But J.R. Watkins offers some vegan options that are free of animal products.

How to know which of J.R. Watkins’ products are vegan?

The following is a snippet of the email response I received from JR Watkins when I asked if all their products are vegan:

“J.R. Watkins products are made with plant-based ingredients and are not tested on animals. Some of our products do contain animal-derived ingredients such as lanolin or beeswax. As we do not have a specifically vegan line, please let us know which product you would like to know more about.”

Where to buy J.R. Watkins? Check out Amazon and Target!

Vegan Policies

Similar to ‘Cruelty-Free,’ there is no standard or legal definition for the label ‘Vegan.’ But Vegan is generally used to mean formulated without animal-derived ingredients or animal by-products.

Some common animal products in cosmetics include carmine, lanolin, snail mucus, beeswax, honey, pearl or silk-derived ingredients, animal-based glycerin, keratin, and squalene.

There are plant-based and synthetic alternatives to animal-derived ingredients. But unless a brand explicitly labels its ingredients or product as Vegan, it’s often difficult to know with certainty whether a product is vegan just by reading the ingredient list.

So it’s best to ask the company and manufacturers to ensure the ingredients they chose were from non-animal sources.

I hope this article helped you to understand J.R. Watkins’ cruelty-free and vegan status and by choosing cruelty-free together, we can help end animal testing for cosmetics once and for all!

Similar to ‘Cruelty-Free,’ there is no standard or legal definition for the label ‘Vegan.’ But Vegan is generally used to mean formulated without animal-derived ingredients or animal by-products.

Some household cleaning products contain animal-based surfactants and solvents.

Unless it’s clearly stated the surfactants and solvents are plant-based or plant-derived, it’s sometimes difficult to know with certainty whether a product is vegan just by reading the ingredient list.

So it’s best to ask the company and manufacturers to ensure the ingredients they’ve chosen to use were from non-animal sources.

Where are Grove Co.’s products made?

I asked Grove Co. where their products are manufactured and they told me:

“Some of our Grove Collaborative brand products are produced in China using ethical and earth-friendly practices, including avoiding harmful coating, plastics, chemicals, and dyes. We do our best to follow manufacturing processes that require less energy to produce and cut back on releasing greenhouse gases and other pollutants. For all international vendors, we conduct social welfare audits to ensure that all employees are in safe working conditions and paid fairly.”

*Note: Products made in China are not required to be tested on animals. Only some cosmetics that are imported and sold in physical stores in mainland China are required to be tested on animals according to China’s animal testing laws.

Urban Hydration is a cruelty-free brand. Urban Hydration has confirmed they do not test their products or ingredients on animals or ask others to test on their behalf. Their suppliers also do not test on animals, nor do they allow their products to be tested on animals when required by law. And finally, their products are not sold in stores in mainland China or any other country that may require animal testing.

By our standards, we would consider Urban Hydration to be Cruelty-Free.

Below is a screenshot of what’s currently stated on Urban Hydration’s website about its animal testing policy:

What About China’s Animal Testing Laws?

Urban Hydration has confirmed they do not sell their products in retail stores in mainland China; therefore, they are not required to test on animals.

As of May 1, 2021, some imported ordinary cosmetics can be exempt from animal testing under certain conditions. However, for the most part, animal testing is still legally required for most imported cosmetics in 2022.

Cruelty-Free Policies

Note that there is no legal definition for the label ‘Cruelty-Free.’ It can mean different things to different people.

Also, note that Cruelty-Free and Vegan don’t always mean the same thing.

Is Urban Hydration Vegan?

‘Vegan’ in cosmetics can refer to an entire brand that is 100% Vegan or a specific product is vegan.

In the case of Urban Hydration, not all of their products are vegan. But they have some products that are suitable for vegans.

How to know which of Urban Hydration’s products are vegan?

Below is a snippet of the email response I received from Urban Hydration when I asked if all of their products are vegan:

“Everything is vegan except for the honey products.”

Vegan Policies

Similar to ‘Cruelty-Free,’ there is no standard or legal definition for the label ‘Vegan.’ But it usually means no animal-derived ingredients or animal by-products.

Some common animal products used in cosmetics include carmine, lanolin, snail mucus, beeswax, honey, pearl or silk-derived ingredients, animal-based glycerin, keratin, and squalene.

There are plant-based and synthetic alternatives to animal-derived ingredients. But it’s sometimes difficult to know with certainty whether a product is vegan just by reading the ingredient list.

So it’s best to ask the company and manufacturers to ensure the ingredients they’ve chosen to use were from non-animal sources.

I hope this article helped you to understand Urban Hydration’s cruelty-free and vegan status and by choosing cruelty-free together, we can help end animal testing for cosmetics once and for all!

I asked PYT Beauty where their products are manufactured and they told me:

“Some of our products are manufactured in China and some are in Taiwan.”

*Note: Cosmetics made in China are not required to be tested on animals. Only cosmetics that are imported and sold in physical stores in mainland China are required to be tested on animals according to China’s animal testing laws.

Ethical Mica Mining Policy

Mica is a mineral that’s used in cosmetics to add a shimmery effect. But the mining of natural mica has been linked to child labor and human rights violations.

Unless the company discloses its mica mining policy, we have no way of knowing whether its mica is ethically sourced without child or forced labor.

So I asked PYT Beauty if their mica is ethically sourced without the use of child labor and they responded by saying,

“All of our factories certify that there is no child labor used in the sourcing of mica. “

2023 Update! It’s just been announced that Kao will acquire Bondi Sands. Kao is NOT a cruelty-free corporation, as they allow some of their other subsidiaries to test on animals when required by law.

It’s your choice whether you want to support or boycott cruelty-free brands owned by a parent company that is not cruelty-free. There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer to this. I encourage you to do what you’re comfortable with.

Ethical Mica Mining Policy

Unless the company discloses its mica mining policy, we have no way of knowing whether its mica is ethically sourced without child or forced labor.

Thankfully, Naturium states on its website,

“Responsible sourced natural mica using fully ethical, traceable and environmentally friendly processes. USA produced”
