Ecover is *Cruelty-Free

Ecover has confirmed they do not test their products or ingredients on animals or ask others to test on their behalf. Their suppliers also do not test on animals, nor do they allow their products to be tested on animals when required by law.

By our standards, we would consider Ecover to be *Cruelty-Free.

*Ecover is owned by SC Johnson, a corporation that is NOT cruelty-free because they allow some of their other brands to test on animals.

It’s your choice whether you want to support or boycott cruelty-free brands owned by a parent company that is not cruelty-free. There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer to this. I encourage you to do what you’re comfortable with, but I think it’s important to disclose that Ecover owns SC Johnson.

Below is a screenshot of what’s currently stated on Ecover’s website about its animal testing policy:

Cruelty-Free Policies

Note that there is no legal definition for the label ‘Cruelty-Free.’ It can mean different things to different people. But Cruelty-Free is generally used to imply no animal testing. More specifically, the ingredients, formulation, or finished product are not tested on animals at any stage of product development.

At ethical elephant, we always assess a company’s cruelty-free policy using our Cruelty-Free Checklist. This ensures no animal testing was performed by the brand itself, its suppliers, or any third parties.

Also, note that Cruelty-Free and Vegan don’t always mean the same thing.

Ecover is 100% Vegan

Ecover has confirmed all of its products are vegan and don’t contain any animal-derived ingredients or by-products.

The following is a screenshot of what’s currently stated on Ecover’s website about its vegan claims:

Is Ecover Vegan?

Vegan Policies

Similar to ‘Cruelty-Free,’ there is no standard or legal definition for the label ‘Vegan.’ But it usually means no animal-derived ingredients or animal by-products.

Some household cleaning products contain animal-based surfactants and solvents.

Unless it’s clearly stated the surfactants and solvents are plant-based or plant-derived, it’s sometimes difficult to know with certainty whether a product is vegan just by reading the ingredient list.

So it’s best to ask the company and manufacturers to ensure the ingredients they’ve chosen to use were from non-animal sources.

Where are Ecover’s products made?

I asked Ecover where their products are manufactured and they told me,

“We would like to inform you that Ecover is a manufacturer located in Belgium.”

I hope this article helped you to understand Ecover’s cruelty-free and vegan status and by choosing cruelty-free together, we can help end animal testing once and for all!

Is Biokleen Cruelty-Free?

🐰 Biokleen is a *cruelty-free brand. None of Biokleen’s ingredients or products are tested on animals. Biokleen has met all the criteria in our Cruelty-Free Checklist and is included in our Cruelty-Free Directory.

Does Biokleen Test on Animals?

When asking, does Biokleen test on animals? We must look beyond to ensure none of Biokleen’s ingredients or suppliers test on animals. And they don’t allow any of their products or ingredients to be tested on animals when required by law.

In our research, we discovered the following:

  • ✓ Biokleen confirmed they do not test their products or ingredients on animals or ask others to test on their behalf.
  • ✓ Biokleen confirmed all their ingredient suppliers do not test on animals
  • ✓ Biokleen confirmed they do not allow or sell their products under conditions where animal testing is required by law

By meeting all of our Cruelty-Free Criteria, Biokleen is a *cruelty-free brand by our standards.

*Biokleen is owned by Weiman, a corporation that is NOT cruelty-free because they allow some of their other brands to test on animals.

The decision is yours whether you want to support or boycott cruelty-free brands owned by a parent company that is not cruelty-free. There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer to this. Do what you’re comfortable with. I just thought it was important to disclose that Weiman owns Biokleen.

What is Biokleen’s Animal Testing Policy?

Below is a screenshot of what’s currently stated on Biokleen’s website about its animal testing policy:

Is Biokleen Cruelty-Free?

Is Biokleen Certified Cruelty-Free?

Biokleen is certified cruelty-free by PETA.

Cruelty-Free Policies 2023

Just because a brand claims it is ‘Cruelty-Free,’ doesn’t always mean that’s the case.

That’s because there is no legal definition for the label ‘Cruelty-Free.’ It can mean different things to different people.

How We Assess Cruelty-Free Policies

Since starting my blog in 2015, I’ve been emailing companies asking about their animal testing policies and cruelty-free commitments.

And based on the responses I receive from companies, I’ll research to find any supporting facts needed before concluding whether the brand should be classified as “Cruelty-Free,” “Animal-Tested,” or “Grey Area – Unclear Policies.”

☕ Every week, I continue to reach out to new brands while trying my best to keep current brands updated. If you found any of my posts or guides helpful, consider Buying Me A Coffee! I would greatly appreciate it! ❤

What about Vegan?

Just because something is called Cruelty-Free, doesn’t always mean it’s Vegan. And vice versa.

Cruelty-Free only refers to no animal testing, while Vegan means formulated without animal products.

Some brands are Cruelty-Free, but not Vegan.

And some are Vegan, but not Cruelty-Free.

Another important distinction to know is, Vegan in cosmetics can refer to an entire brand is 100% Vegan, or a specific product is Vegan.

Is Biokleen Vegan?

⭐ Biokleen is a 100% vegan brand. All their products are vegan, and are formulated without any animal-derived ingredients or by-products.

When I asked Biokleen if all of their products are vegan, they said, “Yes, that is correct.”

Where to buy Cosmetics? Check out Walmart and Amazon!

Vegan Policies

Similar to ‘Cruelty-Free,’ there is no standard or legal definition for the label ‘Vegan.’ But Vegan is generally used to mean formulated without animal-derived ingredients or animal by-products.

Some common animal products in cosmetics include carmine, lanolin, snail mucus, beeswax, honey, pearl or silk-derived ingredients, animal-based glycerin, keratin, and squalene.

There are plant-based and synthetic alternatives to animal-derived ingredients. But unless a brand explicitly labels its ingredients or product as Vegan, it’s often difficult to know with certainty whether a product is vegan just by reading the ingredient list.

So it’s best to ask the company and manufacturers to ensure the ingredients they chose were from non-animal sources.

Where are Biokleen’s products made?

Biokleen states on its website,

“Additionally, all of the company’s products are manufactured in its dedicated facility in Vancouver, Washington using 100% renewable energy offsets.”

I hope this article helped you to understand Biokleen’s cruelty-free and vegan status and by choosing cruelty-free together, we can help end animal testing once and for all!

2022 Update! Better Life states they do not advertise their products as being vegan.

Better Life is NOT Vegan

In 2020, I emailed and asked Better Life if their products are vegan and they responded back saying, “All of our products are vegan.

But I was recently informed by a reader that they had called Better Life’s customer service line and was told the company is not vegan. So I emailed Better Life to ask if they’re vegan and they told me, “BETTER LIFE is not vegan certified not do we advertise the products as vegan.”

I’m not sure what has changed since 2020 with their formulations or manufacturing but based on Better Life’s most recent response, I can no longer classify Better Life to be a vegan brand or recommend any of their products as being vegan-friendly.

Where are AspenClean’s products made?

On their company website, some of AspenClean’s product states “Proudly made in Canada” or “Made in the USA”.

I hope this article helped you to understand AspenClean’s cruelty-free and vegan status and by choosing cruelty-free together, we can help end animal testing once and for all!

Mrs. Meyer’s is *Cruelty-Free

Mrs. Meyer’s has confirmed they do not test their products or ingredients on animals or ask others to test on their behalf. Their suppliers also do not test on animals, nor do they allow their products to be tested on animals when required by law.

“And we never, ever test our products on animals, nor are our products made with animal-derived ingredients.”

By our standards, we would consider Mrs. Meyer’s to be *Cruelty-Free.

*Mrs. Meyer’s is owned by SC Johnson, a corporation that is NOT cruelty-free because they allow some of their other brands to test on animals.

It’s your choice whether you want to support or boycott cruelty-free brands owned by a parent company that is not cruelty-free. There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer to this. I encourage you to do what you’re comfortable with, but I think it’s important to disclose that SC Johnson owns Mrs. Meyer’s.

Mrs. Meyer’s is 100% Vegan

Mrs. Meyer’s has confirmed all of its current products are vegan and don’t contain any animal-derived ingredients or by-products.

Note that a few of Mrs. Meyer’s products used to contain beeswax but they have discontinued those products.

The following is a snippet of the email response I received from Mrs. Meyer’s when I asked if all of their products are vegan:

“Thank you for your interest in Mrs. Meyer’s® Clean Day! I’m happy to share that none of our current products contain any animal ingredients. That said, several discontinued products contained beeswax including: Hand Balm, Diaper Balm, Lip& Cheek Balm, and Furniture Cream.”

I asked Mrs. Meyer’s where their products are manufactured and they told me:

“Mrs. Meyer’s® Clean Day products are all manufactured in the USA.”
