Zero-Waste Mascara

Looking to reduce single-use plastic packaging in your cruelty-free & vegan makeup routine?

I’m sharing some low and zero-waste mascara from brands that don’t test on animals in this post. Also, none of these eco-friendly mascaras contain any animal-derived ingredients, including beeswax.

I managed to find 10 low to zero-waste vegan mascara that comes in either compostable or reusable/refillable packaging. From eco-friendly paper packaging, and glass vials to metal tins and refillable systems.

Zero-Waste Packaging Mascara

River Organics Zero Waste Vegan Mascara

River Organics

River Organics is an independent beauty company located in Wilmington, NC. They offer a zero-waste vegan mascara that comes in eco-friendly paper packaging with a biodegradable sugar cane label. You also have the option to get it with or without the brush to reduce waste further.

Lush Naked Mascara

This innovative zero-plastic packaging vegan mascara designed by Lush includes three wands to choose from for different effects, all made from non-plastic, bio-based, and non-toxic polypropylene. From a thick wand to add thickness and volume, a one-sided comb for added definition, to a wand with a circular end that separates lashes.

To use, hold your chosen naked mascara with clean, dry fingers. Lightly wet the tip of the brush and place it into the mascara shape using very minimal water. Rub the brush around the inside of the product in circular motions, making sure there is enough product coating the brush. Brush through lashes, just as you would with any other mascara.

Besame Cosmetics Black Cake Mascara

Bésame Cosmetics

Bésame’s best-selling Black Cake Mascara is now vegan! Inspired by a product from the 1920s, this water-activated mascara is made from natural wax and is made especially for sensitive eyes. It comes in a low-waste, recyclable tin that can be reused with Bésame’s refills. Note that the small brush does come wrapped in plastic.

Birch Babe

Made in Canada with sustainably sourced ingredients, Birch Babe’s all-natural, plastic-free mascara cake comes in a tin with a reusable mascara wand. Crafted with all-natural, toxin-free, and organic ingredients to help strengthen and lengthen lashes while it goes on creamy and lasts without smudging. Available in Black and Brown.

Zerra & Co Plastic-Free Mascara

Zerra & Co.

Handmade in Baltimore, Zerra & Co offers a plastic-free and zero-waste vegan mascara (in Black or Dark Brown) housed in a glass vial. They also claim that while many mascara manufacturers include a plastic insert to remove the excess mascara, Zerra & Co. has chosen to go without it to save the waste.

Refillable Mascara (Vegan)

Izzy Refillable Zero Waste Mascara

Izzy – Refillable Mascara

Izzy offers a refillable mascara system where their tubes are made from medical-grade stainless steel and are designed to be cleaned and refilled over 10,000 times. Izzy mascara comes with no outer packaging and is shipped in reusable mailers manufactured from upcycled materials. The tubes contain zero plastic components, while the plastic wipers and brushes are reground and recycled at their facility.

MOB Beauty

MOB’s refillable volumizing vegan mascara is made with 100% post-consumer recycled PP and is designed using 70% less packaging material than the industry standard mascara. The refill snaps into MOB’s endlessly refillable Mascara Capsule that’s made with 50% post-consumer recycled PET.

The vegan, clean mascara formula is a creamy blend of sunflower and berry wax, olive oil, and jojoba to condition the lashes and provide a creamy, easy-to-build mascara without clumping, tackiness, or flaking.

Elate Cosmetics

Sustainable cosmetics brand Elate Cosmetics has vegan mascara in Black and Brown. Elate’s refillable Essential Mascara was created for even the most sensitive eyes; this water- and sweat-resistant formula helps your mascara stay put, even when you’re on the go. Made with organic white tea, it’s packed with antioxidants for healthier, stronger lashes.

Packaged in a recyclable etched glass vial and water-treated bamboo lid to further reduce the amount of plastic in our packaging. The frosted glass is sand blasted to ensure easy recycling at the end of life. Housed in a biodegradable paper tube to keep your mascara safe.

Zao Organics Refillable Sustainable Mascara

Zao Organic Makeup

Zao has two vegan mascara formulated with natural and organic ingredients; both versions of Zao’s mascara are refillable. Available in black and brown. The outer tube packaging is made of sustainable bamboo, and the inner plastic tube is made from recyclable PET plastic.

Sappho

Sappho’s maximum intensity refillable vegan mascara’s packaging and formula took over two years to come to life and was tested inside and out for PFAs (<10ppm). Sappho’s natural mascara creates intensely black, luscious, long lashes that don’t smudge and includes a wand to separate each lash; this mascara can build from natural to dramatic.

Tip: Keep your old mascara wands and donate them to local wildlife rehabilitation facilities that use them for grooming, cleaning, and treating wild animals. Check out Wands for Wildlife.

Some Great Options But Not Vegan

While researching for zero-waste mascara, I found some more options that come in either compostable or recyclable packaging, but unfortunately, they were not vegan. I thought I mentioned them in this post as I get asked about them, and I wanted to provide you with some vegan alternatives.

Kjaer Weis has two mascara: lengthening mascara and volumizing mascara. Both of them come in refillable packaging, but they also both contain organic beeswax and are therefore not vegan. If you want a refillable vegan mascara in a tube, check out Izzy.

Erin’s Faces Matcha Mascara – is housed in a glass vial for easy recycling, but it contains beeswax and is therefore not vegan. If you prefer a vegan glass packaging mascara tube, check out Pacifica Beauty.

I hope you found this eco-product guide to sustainable packaging and zero-waste mascara helpful on your journey to creating positive change. Some more sustainable beauty guides you might also like:

In our quest to protect ourselves from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays, we often overlook the impact our sunscreen choices can have on the environment.

What is Zero-Waste Sunscreen?

Using zero-waste toothpaste is a small but impactful step towards living a sustainable lifestyle.

Plastic toothpaste tubes can contribute to a significant amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills and oceans. By choosing to buy zero-waste toothpaste, you can reduce your environmental impact, while still maintaining good oral hygiene.

In this eco-product guide, I share a comprehensive list of zero-waste and plastic-free toothpaste, all of which are verified cruelty-free and vegan.

Zero-Waste Toothpaste

Below is a list of cruelty-free and vegan, zero-waste toothpaste options. It’s split between two lists: toothpaste without fluoride and toothpaste containing fluoride.

Toothpaste Fluoride-Free

Toothpaste With Fluoride

Things to consider when looking for sustainable toothpaste are, of course, the price and your budget, and your preference of flavor. As well as if you prefer toothpaste with or without fluoride, if refills are available, and the type of packaging.

From my research, plastic-free toothpaste is generally housed in one of the following packaging options: Glass jars, tins, compostable pouches, or recyclable metal tubes.

Glass and metal can be infinitely recycled. Since they’re also durable, glass and tin jars can be reused and refilled. But glass is heavier than tins or aluminum and is more prone to breaking, so tins or aluminum are probably ideal for travel. While compostable pouches are lightweight and more compact, they’re often single-use and not reusable or refillable. The same goes for recyclable metal toothpaste tubes.

Learn more about each category of zero-waste toothpaste below.

Toothpaste Tablets

Toothpaste tablets are waterless toothpaste formula pressed into a pill-like tablet. To use, you simply pop a tablet into your mouth, bite and chew till it forms a paste, and then brush as usual.

Most toothpaste tablets come in plastic-free and zero-waste packaging that can be reused and refilled with any refills once you’re done. Refills are usually packaged in compostable pouches. However, I noticed some companies don’t offer refills where they’ll send you a new jar when you repurchase. Something to keep in mind.

Why Zero-Waste Toothpaste Matters

Reduces Plastic Waste

Traditional toothpaste tubes are made of plastic and aluminum and are not recyclable. They take hundreds of years to decompose, contributing to the growing problem of plastic waste in the environment. Zero waste toothpaste, on the other hand, comes in sustainable packaging such as glass jars, metal tins, or compostable pouches. These packages are reusable, recyclable, or biodegradable, reducing the amount of plastic waste that ends up in landfills and oceans.

Natural Ingredients

Most traditional toothpaste contains chemicals such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), triclosan, and microbeads, which can be harmful to our health and the environment. SLS can irritate the skin and cause mouth ulcers. Triclosan is an antibacterial agent that can disrupt hormones and contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Microbeads are tiny plastic particles that can be harmful to marine life when they end up in oceans. Zero waste toothpaste, on the other hand, uses natural ingredients such as baking soda, coconut oil, and essential oils, which are safe for our health and the environment.

Saves Money in the Long Run

Zero waste toothpaste may seem more expensive than traditional toothpaste at first glance, but in the long run, it can save you money. Most zero waste toothpaste comes in a concentrated form, meaning you need less toothpaste per use. They also come in larger sizes, reducing the frequency of repurchasing toothpaste. Moreover, some zero waste toothpaste brands offer refill options, allowing you to reuse the packaging and save money on repurchasing.

Conclusion

Switching to zero waste toothpaste is a small but impactful step towards living a sustainable lifestyle. It can reduce plastic waste, eliminate harmful chemicals, and save you money in the long run. By choosing a zero waste toothpaste brand that fits your needs and preferences, you can take care of your oral hygiene while taking care of the environment.

A lightweight refillable matte lipstick with built-in lip balm. It’s a dual-ended matte lip color and conditioning lip balm that delivers silky smooth, vivid color. Trestique’s Matte Lip Crayon + Balm packaging is made from 96.85% post-consumer and post-industrial recycled materials.

Note: Kjaer Weis, Ogee, and Soshe also makes refillable lipsticks and are cruelty-free brands. However, their lipsticks are not vegan as they contain beeswax and/or carmine.

Why Refillable Lipsticks?

Have you ever counted to see how many tubes of lipsticks you own? My personal lipstick collection includes well over 30+ cruelty-free & vegan lipsticks, and that’s not including the countless lipsticks I’ve thrown away over the years past their expiration.

In an effort to green up my makeup stash and beauty routine, I was surprised to learn some recycling facilities do not accept little containers including lipstick tubes that often get screened out or caught in the facility’s disposal stream where they will often end up in the landfill.

Considering that lipsticks only last 8-12 months and the average woman owns over 40 makeup products, that’s a lot of single-use lipsticks that get thrown away and ending up in the landfill.

The zero-waste option are solid lipsticks that come in aluminum tins that can be recycled. But if you prefer your lipstick in a tube rather than a tin, then your next best option are refillable lipsticks.

They’re super easy to swap in and out and best of all, they will save countless single-use lipstick cases from going into the landfill.

Zero-Waste Lip Balms

Looking for a vegan lip balm in sustainable, plastic-free, and zero-waste packaging?

While researching for this product guide, I found that most zero-waste lip balms contain beeswax, making them not vegan. So I wanted to find and compile a list of 100% vegan and cruelty-free lip balms that come in sustainable packaging.

All 10 zero-waste lip balms listed in this post are cruelty-free and have met all of the criteria in our Cruelty-Free Checklist. And their lip balm formulas are vegan, meaning they don’t contain any animal-derived ingredients.

As for packaging, all but one are completely plastic-free. I included one refillable lip balm option that contains minimal plastic components as an additional option.

Coconut Matter Zero Waste Lip Balms

Coconut Matter

Coconut Matter has a range of vegan, zero-waste lip balms in different scents like grapefruit, lavender, and peppermint. They also have some tinted and colored lip balms to choose from too. Coconut Matter’s lip balms come in zero-waste packaging made out of paper tubes that are rolled by hand using cardboard lined with food-grade wax paper on the inside.

All of which come in 100% plastic-free, home compostable packaging.

Hurraw! Slim Slider Tins

Hurraw! Balm

I love Hurraw! classic vegan lip balms, so I was happy to see they offer some in a plastic-free, Slim Slider tin. Currently, only their Coconut, Mint, and Vanilla Bean balms are available in a slim rectangular tin packaging. All of Hurraw! lip balms are vegan, palm-free, and made with organic, natural, and raw ingredients.

Axiology Tinted Balmies

In addition, their lip balm formula is 100% of natural origin and certified organic.

The post 15+ Sustainable & Refillable Skincare to Try in 2021 appeared first on ethical elephant.

]]>

To reduce single-use plastic packaging in our skincare, I’ve rounded up some of the best cruelty-free, vegan, and refillable skincare products to try in 2021.

All of the cruelty-free brands mentioned in this post don’t test on animals and are either 100% vegan or offer some vegan options.

To make it easier to find sustainable packaging and refillable beauty products, I’ve kept this list exclusively for skincare products. See here for a list of sustainable packaging and refillable Makeup products. (A list for refillable hair and bath & body products coming soon!)

Refillable Skincare Packaging

Starting off with some cruelty-free brands that have designed reusable and refillable packaging for their skincare products. Buy the primary packaging once and when it’s time to repurchase, just buy the individual refill cartridges or pods. Swap out the empty container with the refill and reuse the main packaging over and over again.

Humanrace refillable skincare products

Humanrace

Founded by Pharrell Williams, Humanrace offers a three-step refillable skincare routine. Start with their rice powder cleanser, followed by their lotus enzyme exfoliator, and finish with the humidifying face cream. All three items are 100% vegan, and Leaping Bunny certified cruelty-free.

When you’ve used any item up, purchase or subscribe to receive their individual refill units. To refill your existing container, all you have to do is remove the lid, lift out the empty container, then insert the refill.

Kjaer Weis refillable skincare products

Kjaer Weis

Kjaer Weis is known for their luxurious and refillable makeup system but did you know their skincare products come in refills as well?

When it’s time to purchase a refill, be sure to keep the lid, dropper, spray, or pump. Then swap out the bottle with Kjaer Weis refill containers currently available for their facial oil, toner, cleanser, and body oil. Be sure to check ingredient lists and product descriptions to find which ones are vegan.

Fenty Skin refillable skincare products

Fenty Skin (LVMH)

Fenty Skin’s SPF 30 sunscreen and overnight recovery gel-cream come in sleek refillable packaging. Once you run out of product, get their easy-to-use refills that effortlessly snap into their refillable jars and containers. All of Fenty skincare products are 100% Vegan.

*Note: Fenty Skin is cruelty-free but they’re owned by LVMH, a parent company that is NOT cruelty-free.

Fitglow refillable skincare products

Fitglow

Fitglow offers a line of organic, gluten-free, and vegan refillable skincare formulated with plant-based ingredients to improve and transform skin. Currently, Fitglow refillable containers are available for their essences and cloud ceramide face balm. Both of which are 100% vegan.

Birkenstock Natural Skin Care refillable skincare products

Birkenstock Natural Skincare

Known for its cork-based sandals, Birkenstock has its own line of natural skincare formulated with cork oak extract as its principal raw material of the product range. And they offer refill cartridges of some of their vegan face creams. Be sure to check the ingredients and product descriptions to see which items are vegan.

Adorn refillable skincare products

Adorn Cosmetics

Australian cruelty-free and vegan cosmetics company, Adorn offers a range of refill pouches for some of their best-selling skincare products. Opting for one of their eco-refill pouches will have a lower impact on the environment as they claim it uses 90% less plastic, produces less waste, and consumes less energy.

From cleansing milk, hydrating finishing mist, makeup remover, facial oils, daily moisturizers, exfoliants, and night cream. Adorn has many vegan refillable skincare products to choose from!

Refillable Skincare Products

The following is a list of one-off sustainable packaging and refillable skincare products offered by cruelty-free brands. I’m hoping that sharing and promoting their one refillable item will encourage these brands to launch more refillable products in their collection!

Skyn Iceland refillable jar and refill pod

Skyn Iceland

Nordic Renewal Pre & Probiotic Cream is a fragrance-free and 100% vegan face cream by Skyn Iceland that comes in a refillable jar and refill pod.

Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant is refillable

Dermalogica (Unilever)

Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant is now available in a 2.6 oz refill pouch that uses 92% less plastic!

*Note: Dermalogica is cruelty-free but they’re owned by Unilever, a parent company that is NOT cruelty-free.

Tata Harper Water-Lock Moisturizer refill pod

Tata Harper

Tata Harper recently launched a recyclable refill pod for their Water-Lock Moisturizer designed to reduce overall waste.

Suntegrity face sunscreen refill

Suntegrity

Suntegrity’s moisturizing face sunscreen & primer comes in a refill now. The refill slides right into your existing canister and cuts down on plastic waste. This product is vegan.

Supergoop and Jane Iredale Refill Sunscreen Powder Brush

Reapplying sunscreen is important to protect your skin from sun damage. So I thought I’d include two refillable powder sunscreens from Supergoop and Jane Iredale. They’re super easy to refill. Simply unscrew and insert a refill canister into the bottom of the brush.

Return & Refillable Skincare

To keep the product packaging in circulation, here are some options for return and refillable systems offered by cruelty-free skincare brands. Unlike the other refillable skincare products and brands mentioned above, you will have to send the empty containers back to the company. That way, companies can clean, reuse, and refill the bottles while keeping them in circulation.

Plaine Products Refill System for Vegan Skincare

Plaine Products

Plaine Products are known for their plastic-free & refill subscription system. In addition to hair and body care products, they also have three vegan skincare products available as part of their refill system. It consists of a face wash, moisturizer, and toner.

How does it work? Subscribe or order a refill when you’re ready, but keep the spray pump from your original bottle. Swap the empty bottle with the refill bottle. Then send back your empty bottle to Plaine Products.

Meow Meow Tweet Bulk Refills

Meow Meow Tweet

Meow Meow Tweet offers their products in bulk refills which saves you money and produces less packaging waste. Bulk refills are available for their face toner, cleansers, and face oils. All of Meow Meow Tweet’s products are 100% vegan and palm oil-free.

How does it work? When you’re running low, purchase from any of their bulk refills products. Reuse and refill your existing bottle. Once your bulk refill bottle is empty, send it back to the company, and they’ll sterilize and reuse it.

REN and Terracycle Loop Refill Initiative

REN (Unilever)

REN has partnered with Terracycle’s Loop initiative to offer an innovative refillable skincare solution. They started the program with six of their bestselling products, which include a vegan facial cleanser.

How does it work? Order from the Loop store. You’ll get a specially-designed reusable glass bottle delivered in a shipping tote. Once you’ve used up the product, put it back in the tote and organize a collection from your home. The bottles are then sterilized and refilled with the product before it’s returned to you to use again and to start the loop again.

*Note: REN is cruelty-free but they’re owned by Unilever, a parent company that is NOT cruelty-free.

The Body Shop In-Store Refill Scheme

The Body Shop also has an in-store refill scheme, but it’s currently only available in select stores. And I believe they only have refills for hair care, shower gel, and hand wash.

Let me know in the comments below if you prefer a return & refill system for your skincare or just getting refill pods or cartridges instead?

Every bit counts, and choosing skincare products that reduce single-use plastic packaging will help keep our oceans blue and our planet green!

Here's what I think about the 100% compostable and sustainable phone case after a month.

Pela Case Honest Review

Last month, I shared some eco-friendly and sustainable phone cases I found while researching for a new phone case to buy. I also shared that I decided to buy a Pela Case because I felt they were the most transparent about their compostable claims and materials. And I liked how they’re a certified B Corp, Certified Climate Neutral, and a Canadian company.

In this post, I’ll be sharing my honest review of my compostable Pela iPhone case.

Phone Case: Seashell Pink Peaks Eco-Friendly iPhone 12/ iPhone 12 Pro Case

Price: I paid CA$61.55 after provincial and federal sales tax.

Delivery: I ordered my Pela Case on April 28 and I received it on May 7. That’s a total of 7 business days.

Pela Case Delivered in Brown Paper Envelope
Resealable Envelope To Send Back Any Old Phone Case

Packaging: It came in a compact and sturdy brown paper envelope. Pela designed the envelope to be resealable and reusable where you can use it to send your old phone case back to them to be properly recycled which is what I will be doing.

The phone case didn’t come with any outer packaging. It comes as is with a paper insert and a small hand written note.

Pela Case - Seashell Pink Peaks

Design: This design is super chic and cute. I will say though, the picture of this design on Pela’s website doesn’t appear to have as many dark specks compared to the one I got IRL. I originally wasn’t a fan of the look of Pela phone cases because of the speckled look (which are actual flax shive pieces) but they launched this design and I really liked how it looked on their website. They say no two phone cases are exactly the same so maybe I got one with more visible dark specks than others. It’s not a total deal-breaker for me but I thought I’d mention it.

Fit: The case feels soft & smooth. It fits nicely on my phone where it doesn’t slip out on its own. And the case is flexible enough where it’s easy to remove. And like any phone case, it feels a little bulky.

Function: I did accidentally drop my phone once while I had my Pela Case on and nothing happened to my phone nor did I find any scratches. So far so good!

Pela Case Review
Slight marks on the edges of my Pela Case

Durability: I’ve been using the phone case for almost 4 weeks now. The only wear and tear I’ve experienced so far are the edges of the phone case, which are a little scratched and stained. I think the scratch marks happened when I put my phone in the side pocket of my vegan leather backpack. I guess with the phone case on makes it a snug fit. And since the vegan leather material is a bit tough and hard, the sides of the phone case got scratched. It just looks like super minor scratches.

The top edge of the phone case is also slightly stained (see above photos for reference). It just sort of looks like it’s dirty or the original bright color of the phone case is fading. I read many reviews stating Pela Cases tend to fade but I wasn’t expecting it to be this quick. I’ve only had it for less than a month and it’s already showing early signs of discoloration.

I tried cleaning it with a damp cloth and it kind of worked. But there’s still visible marks where it just looks used and slightly ‘dirty.’

My Final Thoughts: For CA$60+, this is not a cheap or affordable phone case. But I was OK with spending that much to support a B Corp, Canadian, and sustainable company. I really like Pela’s waste-free mission and the fact that they conducted independent tests to show how readily compostable their products are. While researching other “compostable” phone cases, many other brands did not conduct their own tests or provide additional information to substantiate their compostable claims.

Pela Compostable Phone Case Review

I think the Pela phone case I bought does its job of protecting my phone. But after four weeks of using the phone case, I’ve already noticed some visible (but minor) wear and tear to the phone case. Although they are minor scratches and marks, I thought it was important to mention them.

Overall, I like the look of my Pela Case, I believe in the company’s ethos and sustainability claims, and it’s done the job of protecting my phone. So I would recommend Pela Case if you’re looking for a new and sustainable phone case.

Are Invisalign aligners and bags recyclable?

Earlier this year, I got Invisalign® treatment to help straighten my teeth. I got 13 trays and 3 more in refinements. However, as a result, I accumulated quite a bit of plastic waste.

I wanted to know whether any of Invisalign’s packaging, from the trays themselves to the plastic bags that it comes in, can be recycled? And if not, how to properly and responsibly dispose of them.

So I asked the makers of Invisalign® and it took them over a month to get back to me. But here’s what I found out.

Worn aligners cannot be recycled because they are considered medical waste, and the aligner bags are not readily recyclable. But Invisalign has recently invested and started a pilot program where they’ll take back used aligners and incinerate them to produce energy, as they claim. However, this is not yet available to all patients and doctors, so check with your office.

Below is the full email I received from Align Technology:

We appreciate you reaching out to us for information regarding aligner packaging and disposal. We share your concern regarding efforts to minimize the environmental footprint.

Our philosophy is to reduce the amount of single use plastics we use and to keep as much of our single use plastics out of landfills as possible. The plastic used in Invisalign clear aligners is medical grade plastic, and once the aligners have been worn by patients, they are considered medical waste—they can’t be recycled like household plastic.

We are investing in a program to retrieve used aligners from our doctor customers and their patients. The aligners we get back are incinerated and used to produce energy. This is being piloted so please check with your office to see if this is offered with your doctor. We hope that this will be a program we can offer for all our patients and doctors in the near future.

If your office is not part of the pilot program at this time, please connect with your waste management department for recommendations regarding the disposal of this item in your area. According to our vendor, the aligner bags are not considered materials that can be placed within the standard consumer recycling stream so we recommend checking this with your county waste management department as well.

I was glad to hear back from the company that makes Invisalign. And to hear they are working to reduce single-use plastics and piloting a program to take back worn aligners. But if only there was a way for them to take back worn aligners and somehow turn them into reusable materials for future aligners instead of incinerating them.

If you’re on your Invisalign journey, consider writing to Align Technology and ask about their environmental commitments. Hopefully, the more paying customers they hear from, the more initiatives they will take!

How Do We Define ‘Sustainable’ Beauty? https://ethicalelephant.com/our-sustainability-standards/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=our-sustainability-standards https://ethicalelephant.com/our-sustainability-standards/#respond Wed, 26 May 2021 19:41:59 +0000 https://ethicalelephant.com/?p=56269 There is no legal definition for 'Sustainable' beauty, so here's how we define it. And it's not what you think.

The post How Do We Define ‘Sustainable’ Beauty? appeared first on ethical elephant.

]]>

As part of our new cruelty-free brand directory, we now have a label for Sustainable Brands.

In this post, I want to explain what this label means to us and why some brands have this label and others don’t.

Defining Sustainable Beauty

There is no legal or standard definition for ‘Sustainable Beauty.’ The only thing we seem to agree on is how universally undefined the label is.

What is ‘sustainable’ to one company is often not the same for another.

One may focus solely on eliminating virgin or single-use plastic packaging. Some are dedicated to offering recyclable packaging and shipping materials. While a few are committed to measuring and reducing their carbon emissions throughout their entire supply chain.

And I’ve even seen some that aspire to be more sustainable, where making claims of supporting responsible and ethical philosophies seems to make it so.

Unrestricted Use of the ‘Sustainable’ Label

Calling a brand or its products ‘sustainable’ is entirely subjective and relative to the size of the company, its products, location, manufacturing, distribution, and many other factors.

We can often answer yes or no to is this brand cruelty-free? a.k.a does this brand engage in any animal testing in their product formulations?

The same with vegan cosmetics, yes or no: Do any of their products contain ingredients derived or obtained from living or killed animals?

But to answer the question, is this brand sustainable? It will depend on who is answering and whether the brand is doing ‘enough’ by their standards.

We now have a section on each brand page stating, is this brand sustainable? But I will be avoiding answering yes or no to this question. Instead, I provide a summary of the brand’s sustainability claims and initiatives. That way, you can decide for yourself if this brand is sustainable to your standards.

How Do We Define Sustainability? We Don’t.

Brands marked with our ‘Sustainable’ label means the company is committed to sustainably, responsibly, and ethically producing its products with minimal impact on the environment.

I recognize that is a loose definition that can mean anything, but it’s where we are starting.

In our brand directory, brands that have the ‘Sustainable’ label simply means they are doing something that I felt was worthy for you to learn more about. Whether they are doing enough to meet your definition of sustainability is for you to decide.

Instead of striving for perfection and setting an unattainable and unrealistic set of universal sustainability criteria, I thought I’d start somewhere instead of nowhere. My intent with the ‘Sustainable’ label is to point you to some brands that are doing some cool and noteworthy things in the realm of sustainability.

Where To From Here?

In addition to including more brands with our new Sustainable label, I will be taking a deeper dive into each brand’s sustainability claims, initiatives, and policies. And share everything I learn along the way.

To start, my three areas of focus will be:

 • eco-conscious packaging
 • sustainable manufacturing practices
 • ethical and responsible ingredient sourcing policies

As I gather more data from each brand, I will be adding filters to our cruelty-free brand directory. For example, there is currently a filter for ‘Low/Zero-Waste’ and ‘Ethically Sourced Mica’ brands.

Transparency is of the utmost importance to me, so I will be working on adding additional information on what makes these brands zero/low-waste and sharing the responses I received from brands about their ethical mica mining policy.

I will always be sure to provide any updates to our sustainability standards as I learn more and receive information from brands so that you can stay updated on any changes to our standards.

And remember, the most sustainable option is to buy less and use up what you currently have.

The post Best Eco-Friendly & Sustainable Phone Cases of 2021 appeared first on ethical elephant.

]]>

Looking for an eco-friendly and sustainable phone case? I’ve been on the hunt for one for the past couple of months and thought I’d share some eco-friendly phone cases that I found. Along with what makes each one sustainable and different from other sustainable phone cases. And some of the cons and customer reviews I took into consideration when trying to decide which phone case to get.

There were essentially four things I was looking for: (1) what type of material is the phone case made of? (2) how do I properly dispose of it once I’m done with it? ex. is it home compostable? does the company offer a send-back recycling program? (3) is the case long-lasting and durable based on customer reviews? (4) and it’s gotta look good!

And extra bonus points go to supporting companies that donate to social causes, use sustainable, plant-based, or recycled materials, offer a closed-loop system, and that’s located near me.

I ended up ordering one from a brand listed below, see which one I decided to get at the very end of this post!

Sustainable Phone Cases

Here are some eco-friendly and sustainable phone cases that I found:

Reveal – Wood Phone Cases

Reveal – Wood Phone Cases

Reveal is known for its wood tech accessories, so naturally, they have a collection of phone cases made with sustainable and renewable materials like wood, cork, and bamboo. Reveal also donates to select non-profits (so far, $110K donated) and plants a tree for every product sold.

What makes Reveal phone cases sustainable?

Reveal offers several styles of phone cases, some of which are made of cork material or bamboo. They also have a collection of cases made with wood and/or a blend of wood and plastic resin.

But note that Reveal cases are not compostable. Their cases have an inner shell made of poly-carbonate (PVC-free) and the inside lining is made of recycled polyester micro-suede.

What makes Reveal different from other sustainable phone cases?

 • wood, cork, and bamboo case offers a unique look and feels sturdy

Cons:

 • Reveal only has iPhone cases (check out 15:21 if you want a cork phone case for Android or iPhone, they’re based in Sweden)
 • their cases are not compostable or biodegradable as they contain a plastic lining (same with 15:21 cork phone cases)
 • they don’t address how to properly dispose of their cases nor do they offer a send-back recycling scheme
Pela Compostable Phone Case

Pela Compostable Phone Case

Pela is a Canadian company but they ship worldwide with distribution centers in Canada, the US, UK, and EU. Pela is also a certified B Corp, a member of 1% for the Planet, and Certified Climate Neutral.

What makes Pela phone cases sustainable?

Pela case are made from bio-plastic and flax straw fibre ‘waste’ grown in Saskatchewan. Their signature Flaxstic material is made from 45% plant-based materials. And the back panel of their clear case is made from 100% plant-based material.

Pela cases are 100% backyard compostable, claiming to fully break down in under 6 months. Watch this video of Emma (The Simple Environmentalist) showing how her old Pela case decomposed in four months.

A Good Company’s Mobile Cases

A Good Company has a collection of sustainable and 100% compostable mobile cases that are designed and made in Sweden. A Good Company is also a certified B Corp and they donate 4% to causes that promote sustainability and that tackle issues such as climate change.

What makes A Good Company’s mobile cases sustainable?

A Good Company claims their phone cases are “100% made from plants” and made from a by-product from organic linseed farming.

They also claim their cases are 100% compostable and to “plant it in the garden where it will biodegrade”. I asked them how long do their cases take to fully break down and they told me between six weeks to three months depending on the weather.

 • each case design is printed by hand
 • claims their case will break down completely in 6 weeks to 3 months

CASETiFy – Compostable Phone Case

CASETiFy – Compostable Phone Case

CASETiFy is based in Hong Kong and Los Angeles and not all of CASETiFy’s cases are compostable but they have a collection of customizable compostable phone cases. They also claim to donate a tree for every compostable and biodegradable case sold (but I guess not for their other phone cases? 🤔).

What makes CASETiFy’s Compostable phone cases sustainable?

They’re made of bamboo-based materials or ecotify™ which they claim is their proprietary blend of biopolymers, starch, and bamboo. But note they don’t disclose what percentage is plant-based materials.

CASETiFy claims they’re 100% biodegradable and 100% compostable, the website says 180 days in industrial composting. But when I asked them, they told me their compostable cases are home compostable stating “The most current version of the compostable got rid of the sandblast camera ring and successfully engineered it to be completely backyard/ home compostable.”

They also launched a recycling program, in the US and in Hong Kong, where you can send your old phone case and they’ll recycle, reuse, upcycle, or safely dispose of it through TerraCycle’s Zero Waste Initiative

What makes CASETiFy different from other sustainable phone cases?

 • they offer customization where you can print your name or any text of your choice on the phone case

Cons:

 • not all of their phone cases are compostable. Their main collection is made of plastic which they claim are made with 50% post-consumer recycled plastic
 • mixed messaging – their website states industrial composting but they told me their home compostable
 • I asked CASETiFY since their website says 180 days in industrial composting, how long does it take to fully break down via home composting and they responded back saying, “we will be checking up with our production team and looking for more in-depth details. Once we have more information to tell, we will get back to you immediately.” I’ll provide an update if they get back to me.
Urban Armor Gear – Outback Series

Urban Armor Gear – Outback Series

Urban Armor Gear offers a line of compostable phone cases called Outback Series. But not all of Urban Armor Gear’s phone cases are sustainable or compostable.

What makes Urban Armor Gear’s phone case sustainable?

Their Outback Series phone case is made from bioplastic, a blend of PLA, PBAT, and bamboo fiber composite. But they don’t state what percentage is plant-based materials. Urban Armor Gear claims the phone case is 100% compostable, taking 180 days to break down in an industrial composting facility and home composting will take 6 months to 4 years.

What makes Urban Armor Gear phone case different?

 • Urban Armor Gear’s compostable phone case has a smooth finish and doesn’t have that traditional speckled look that other compostable phone cases have

Cons:

 • not all of their phone cases are compostable. Their main collection is made with plastic.
 • limited color and design options, their Outback Series is currently only available in black and lilac
Redhan Bio-Case

Redhan Bio-Case

Redhan is based in the UK and the Maldives, they offer a collection of biodegradable phone cases and accessories. Rehan also plants a tree for every product sold and each phone gives back 5% or more to a social cause.

What makes Redhan’s phone case sustainable?

Redhan Bio-Cases are made from a blend of bioplastic and actual plant fibers but they do not state what percentage of plant-based materials.

They claim their phone cases are biodegradable and breaks down naturally within 6-36 months. I asked them why such a big range from 1/2 to 3 years and they told me, “the exact time of decomposition depends a lot on the environmental factors. It will be a lot quicker in an industrial compost with the proper aeration and the right temperature. It will slower in a backyard compost for example.”

Compostable Phone Cases

I also found several other biodegradable phone case brands making similar claims that their cases are compostable and made from plant-based materials but do not disclose the exact percentage of plant-based materials. They also have a very long decomposing time span from 6 to 36 months. And they don’t state whether their phone cases are compostable via home/backyard or industrial composting.

More ‘Compostable’ Phone Cases

Love ur Planet – based in Australia, their phone case is made from wood, wheat, bamboo, and bio-plastic and claims it’s 100% compostable within 36 months. They also offer customers to send back their case and will compost it for them.

Pangea Case – based in the UK, 100% biodegradable and compostable phone case made of “plant fibers”. Claims their case will break down within 24 months in a compostable environment. In an email response, Pangea stated their producer said their cases are backyard compostable. But it doesn’t seem like they conducted their own or any independent tests to confirm these claims by their producer.

Wave – based in the UK, claims their phone case is biodegradable and made from bioplastic, derived from wheat straw. But when I asked them how long it takes for their cases to fully break down, they told me “though we haven’t conducted any independent testing yet, the cases are compostable via industrial composting facilities and break down in approximately 90 days.”

Mellow – based in Canada, their 100% biodegradable and compostable phone cases are made of “bioplastic produced from renewable biomass sources” which they state takes 6 months to 2 years to break down. Mellow does offer customers to send their case back to them and they’ll compost it for them.

Nativacase – based in Australia, compostable phone case made from natural fibers, predominately wheat straw and natural polymers. Claims their case is compostable and will start breaking down within a few months and will completely decompose in less than two years.

Wilma – based in Sweden, claims their phone case is made from 100% biodegradable materials but other than that, I couldn’t find anything to substantiate their biodegradable claims. I emailed them to ask but never received a response back. They also don’t have any reviews on their website. And purchasers on Amazon said their phone case came in a plastic bag.

While researching which phone case to get, I was surprised to learn that some brands have not conducted independent testing but continue to market and claim their cases are compostable.

I would advise if you were interested in one of the above ‘compostable’ phone case to ask the company how long does it take for their case to fully break down? and are their phone cases readily compostable via industrial or home/backyard? Also, ask them what materials are their compostable phone cases made of and what percentage are plant-based materials?

What phone case did I end up choosing?

I decided to buy a Pela compostable phone case because I love how they’re a certified B Corp, Certified Climate Neutral, and a Canadian company. I also felt like Pela was the most transparent about their materials and compostable claims. I also liked how I could send my old phone case to them for free and they’ll recycle or upcycle it.

I initially didn’t like any of Pela’s designs and wasn’t a fan of the speckled look so I did consider one from A Good Company and Urban Armor Gear. But Pela recently launched a new design that I really liked! But I’ll be sure to let you know what I think about it once it arrives.
