Zero-Waste Mascara

Looking to reduce single-use plastic packaging in your cruelty-free & vegan makeup routine?

I’m sharing some low and zero-waste mascara from brands that don’t test on animals in this post. Also, none of these eco-friendly mascaras contain any animal-derived ingredients, including beeswax.

I managed to find 10 low to zero-waste vegan mascara that comes in either compostable or reusable/refillable packaging. From eco-friendly paper packaging, and glass vials to metal tins and refillable systems.

Zero-Waste Packaging Mascara

River Organics Zero Waste Vegan Mascara

River Organics

River Organics is an independent beauty company located in Wilmington, NC. They offer a zero-waste vegan mascara that comes in eco-friendly paper packaging with a biodegradable sugar cane label. You also have the option to get it with or without the brush to reduce waste further.

Lush Naked Mascara

This innovative zero-plastic packaging vegan mascara designed by Lush includes three wands to choose from for different effects, all made from non-plastic, bio-based, and non-toxic polypropylene. From a thick wand to add thickness and volume, a one-sided comb for added definition, to a wand with a circular end that separates lashes.

To use, hold your chosen naked mascara with clean, dry fingers. Lightly wet the tip of the brush and place it into the mascara shape using very minimal water. Rub the brush around the inside of the product in circular motions, making sure there is enough product coating the brush. Brush through lashes, just as you would with any other mascara.

Besame Cosmetics Black Cake Mascara

Bésame Cosmetics

Bésame’s best-selling Black Cake Mascara is now vegan! Inspired by a product from the 1920s, this water-activated mascara is made from natural wax and is made especially for sensitive eyes. It comes in a low-waste, recyclable tin that can be reused with Bésame’s refills. Note that the small brush does come wrapped in plastic.

Birch Babe

Made in Canada with sustainably sourced ingredients, Birch Babe’s all-natural, plastic-free mascara cake comes in a tin with a reusable mascara wand. Crafted with all-natural, toxin-free, and organic ingredients to help strengthen and lengthen lashes while it goes on creamy and lasts without smudging. Available in Black and Brown.

Zerra & Co Plastic-Free Mascara

Zerra & Co.

Handmade in Baltimore, Zerra & Co offers a plastic-free and zero-waste vegan mascara (in Black or Dark Brown) housed in a glass vial. They also claim that while many mascara manufacturers include a plastic insert to remove the excess mascara, Zerra & Co. has chosen to go without it to save the waste.

Refillable Mascara (Vegan)

Izzy Refillable Zero Waste Mascara

Izzy – Refillable Mascara

Izzy offers a refillable mascara system where their tubes are made from medical-grade stainless steel and are designed to be cleaned and refilled over 10,000 times. Izzy mascara comes with no outer packaging and is shipped in reusable mailers manufactured from upcycled materials. The tubes contain zero plastic components, while the plastic wipers and brushes are reground and recycled at their facility.

MOB Beauty

MOB’s refillable volumizing vegan mascara is made with 100% post-consumer recycled PP and is designed using 70% less packaging material than the industry standard mascara. The refill snaps into MOB’s endlessly refillable Mascara Capsule that’s made with 50% post-consumer recycled PET.

The vegan, clean mascara formula is a creamy blend of sunflower and berry wax, olive oil, and jojoba to condition the lashes and provide a creamy, easy-to-build mascara without clumping, tackiness, or flaking.

Elate Cosmetics

Sustainable cosmetics brand Elate Cosmetics has vegan mascara in Black and Brown. Elate’s refillable Essential Mascara was created for even the most sensitive eyes; this water- and sweat-resistant formula helps your mascara stay put, even when you’re on the go. Made with organic white tea, it’s packed with antioxidants for healthier, stronger lashes.

Packaged in a recyclable etched glass vial and water-treated bamboo lid to further reduce the amount of plastic in our packaging. The frosted glass is sand blasted to ensure easy recycling at the end of life. Housed in a biodegradable paper tube to keep your mascara safe.

Zao Organics Refillable Sustainable Mascara

Zao Organic Makeup

Zao has two vegan mascara formulated with natural and organic ingredients; both versions of Zao’s mascara are refillable. Available in black and brown. The outer tube packaging is made of sustainable bamboo, and the inner plastic tube is made from recyclable PET plastic.

Sappho

Sappho’s maximum intensity refillable vegan mascara’s packaging and formula took over two years to come to life and was tested inside and out for PFAs (<10ppm). Sappho’s natural mascara creates intensely black, luscious, long lashes that don’t smudge and includes a wand to separate each lash; this mascara can build from natural to dramatic.

Tip: Keep your old mascara wands and donate them to local wildlife rehabilitation facilities that use them for grooming, cleaning, and treating wild animals. Check out Wands for Wildlife.

Some Great Options But Not Vegan

While researching for zero-waste mascara, I found some more options that come in either compostable or recyclable packaging, but unfortunately, they were not vegan. I thought I mentioned them in this post as I get asked about them, and I wanted to provide you with some vegan alternatives.

Kjaer Weis has two mascara: lengthening mascara and volumizing mascara. Both of them come in refillable packaging, but they also both contain organic beeswax and are therefore not vegan. If you want a refillable vegan mascara in a tube, check out Izzy.

Erin’s Faces Matcha Mascara – is housed in a glass vial for easy recycling, but it contains beeswax and is therefore not vegan. If you prefer a vegan glass packaging mascara tube, check out Pacifica Beauty.

I hope you found this eco-product guide to sustainable packaging and zero-waste mascara helpful on your journey to creating positive change. Some more sustainable beauty guides you might also like:

Looking for a cruelty-free and vegan deodorant that actually works? You’re not alone. This has been one of the most requested guides by many of you!

So, I’ve done the research for you, and here’s a round-up of 13 best of the best vegan deodorants that actually work!

Most of the deodorant brands you find at the store are from companies that test on animals including Degree, Axe, Old Spice, Arm & Hammer, and Gillette.

In addition, some deodorants may contain ingredients derived from animal sources like animal-based stearic acid, glycine, and royal jelly. Manufacturers often don’t disclose the source of their ingredients on the product packaging so it’s difficult to know with certainty whether a product is vegan just by reading the ingredient list.

Vegan Deodorants

All of the deodorants listed in this guide have been verified as being truly cruelty-free using our Cruelty-Free Checklist. And they’ve all been verified as being vegan and don’t contain any animal-derived ingredients or by-products.

Whether you’re looking for a vegan deodorant that doesn’t contain aluminum or baking soda and you prefer a roll-on, stick, or plastic-free option, there’s something for you in this list!

List of 100% Vegan Nipple Creams | Lanolin-Free, Cruelty-Free https://ethicalelephant.com/vegan-nipple-cream/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=vegan-nipple-cream https://ethicalelephant.com/vegan-nipple-cream/#comments Fri, 18 Feb 2022 19:04:14 +0000 https://ethicalelephant.com/?p=62535 Whether you have a lanolin allergy or want an ethical, vegan nipple cream to use while breastfeeding, here are our top picks!

The post List of 100% Vegan Nipple Creams | Lanolin-Free, Cruelty-Free appeared first on ethical elephant.

]]>
Vegan Nipple Creams

Most nursing and nipple creams on the market contain lanolin, a waxy substance derived from sheep’s wool.

That means, most of the nipple balms advertised are, unfortunately, not vegan-friendly.

So this began my search for a lanolin-free and 100% vegan nipple cream to help heal dry, irritated, cracked, sore nipples while breastfeeding.

I managed to find four options for vegan nursing balms that are free from lanolin and other animal by-products (like beeswax).

These are all safe to use while nursing and will hopefully ease any discomfort while offering a cruelty-free and vegan solution!

Earth Mama - Vegan Nipple Butter

Earth Mama – Vegan Nipple Butter ($13.99)

The original Earth Mama nipple butter is one of the most loved and recommended organic nursing creams but it contains organic beeswax, making it not vegan. The good news is Earth Mama came out with a beeswax-free and 100% vegan nipple cream version! The vegan version comes in purple (not pink) packaging so make sure you get the right one! Earth Mama’s vegan nipple cream contains organic ingredients and is Non-GMO Project Verified.

Attitude - Vegan Nipple Cream

Attitude – Nipple Cream ($15)

Attitude has a great selection of vegan pregnancy and nursing products including a fragrance-free and 100% vegan nursing balm formulated with natural and plant-based ingredients.

SheaMoisture - Raw Shea Cupuaçu Mommy Soothing Nursing Balm

SheaMoisture – Raw Shea Cupuaçu Mommy Soothing Nursing Balm ($8)

SheaMoisture Mommy Soothing Nursing Balm is cruelty-free* and I checked the ingredients from their website and it appears it’s also vegan! Free from beeswax and lanolin. The nipple cream contains Amazonian Cupuaçu, a plant-based Lanolin substitute.

*Note: SheaMoisture is cruelty-free but they’re owned by Unilever, a parent corporation that is NOT cruelty-free.

Frida Mom - Lanolin-Free No-Mess Nipple Balm

Frida Mom – Lanolin-Free No-Mess Nipple Balm ($13)

From the makers of some of the best labor and recovery must-haves, Frida Mom offers a lanolin-free, vegan nipple balm with a no-mess applicator. When confirming whether this product is vegan, the company told me, “we do not believe any animal products have been used in this product.”

I hope to see more cruelty-free and vegan nipple creams available in the future, but until then, I hope you found this short list of options helpful!

Vegan Diaper Rash Cream

Looking for a cruelty-free and vegan diaper rash cream that doesn’t contain lanolin or beeswax? I managed to find 7 vegan diaper creams that claim to help soothe and protect your little one’s bottoms and that are formulated without animal testing or any animal ingredients!

Cruelty-Free Diaper Rash Creams

Surprisingly, some of the most popular diaper rash creams on the market today are from brands that are not cruelty-free and test on animals like Eucerin, Aquaphor, Aveeno, CeraVe, and Cetaphil.

Additionally, most diaper rash creams contain beeswax and/or lanolin, making them not vegan-friendly.

A quick note, however, if that’s all you have access to, please use whatever you can get your hands on. Your baby’s health and comfort are first priority.

And if you find yourself shopping and looking for an animal test-free and vegan diaper cream for your baby then you may find this guide helpful in your research.

Attitude Natural Baby Diaper Cream

Attitude Natural Baby Diaper Cream ($10/2.6 oz)

An unscented, natural, hypoallergenic, vegan diaper cream by Attitude. It contains zinc which helps to form a physical barrier to protect against humidity. This product is EWG VERIFIED™ and Made in Canada.

Hello Bello Soothing Diaper Rash Cream

Hello Bello Soothing Diaper Rash Cream ($8/4 oz)

Made with non-nano zinc oxide and certified organic, plant-derived ingredients, this Soothing Vegan Diaper Rash Cream by Hello Bello helps treat and prevent diaper rash and seal out wetness.

Pipette Vegan Diaper Rash Cream

Pipette Vegan Diaper Rash Cream ($11/3 oz)

Pipette’s fragrance-free, cruelty-free, and vegan diaper rash cream contains 14% non-nano zinc oxide to protect against and soothe the red, chafed skin of diaper rash. Also contains plant-derived squalane.

Babo Botanicals Sensitive Baby Diaper Cream

Babo Botanicals Sensitive Baby Diaper Cream ($12/3 oz)

Babo Botanicals’ diaper rash cream is fragrance-free, 100% vegan, and cloth-diaper friendly. It contains 25% non-nano zinc oxide and organic calendula, shea & cocoa butter to help calm irritation and soothe sensitive skin. Made in the USA.

Boo Bamboo Baby Natural Diaper Cream

Boo Bamboo Baby Natural Diaper Cream ($12/4.05 oz)

Baby Boo Bamboo’s natural vegan diaper cream is formulated with certified organic bamboo extract and aloe vera to help reduce the soreness and severity of diaper rash. Made in Canada. Boo Bamboo also has a vegan diaper cream spray if you want a mess-free application, but it’s got questionable reviews.

Aleva Naturals Soothing Diaper Cream

Aleva Naturals Soothing Diaper Cream ($10.50/3.4 oz)

Aleva Naturals Soothing Vegan Diaper Cream claims to be a smooth, non-greasy formulation. It contains a unique blend of organic shea butter, aloe vera, and natural calendula extracts to provide a protective moisture barrier. Made in Canada.

Ethique Zero-Waste Vegan Diaper Rash Balm

Ethique Zero-Waste Vegan Diaper Rash Balm ($17/ 3.53oz)

If you’re looking for a zero-waste alternative to diaper rash cream, give Ethique’s Baby Bott Balm a try! It claims to apply like a cream then quickly dries to a powder, so that you can get the benefits of a diaper cream and a baby powder in one.

In my research, there were several cruelty-free brands (no animal testing) that offer diaper rash creams but unfortunately, those products are not vegan because they contain beeswax and/or lanolin.

Some of those cruelty-free brands with non-vegan diaper creams include Burt’s Bees, Green Beaver, Earth Mama, Weleda, Motherlove, Badger, Thinkbaby, and Lafe’s.

However, I want to restate that if those brands and their products are the only ones you can get your hands on then please put your baby’s health and comfort first.

Otherwise, I hope you found these 7 options for cruelty-free and vegan diaper creams helpful. Please let us know if you’ve tried any of the above and how you end up liking them!

Vegan Leather Diaper Bags

Looking for a vegan leather diaper bag or backpack that is functional and stylish and can be worn beyond the baby years? Here are my top picks for vegan diaper bags so that you don’t have to sacrifice style for functionality!

When shopping for a diaper bag, you’ll want to consider the size, interior & exterior pockets, and how you prefer to carry the bag like a backpack, top handle, or a messenger-style. Some other things to consider are insulated pockets to store bottles, stroller straps, or whether it includes a changing pad or not.

Also, when it comes to finding a vegan diaper bag, you’ll want to be mindful of the type of materials used. Stay away from genuine animal leather and wool, and be careful of those leather trims or tassels too! Instead, look for diaper bags made with vegan leather or faux leather. And if you want a sustainable vegan diaper bag, I’d suggest shopping second-hand.

Vegan Leather Diaper Backpack

Here are some of my favorite finds for vegan leather diaper backpacks. Some of which can be converted as a top-handle or crossbody bag too!

Fawn Design The Original Diaper Bag

Fawn Design The Original Diaper Bag ($170)

Fawn Design makes some of the most popular diaper bag backpacks, and they all happen to be made with vegan leather! The Original Diaper Bag comes in various colors and features 12 pockets in total. This backpack diaper bag can also be converted to a messenger-style bag where the straps are detachable and adjustable. Fawn Design also has a mini version if you prefer a smaller size.

Skip Hop Evermore 6-in-1 Diaper Backpack

Skip Hop Evermore 6-in-1 Diaper Backpack ($145)

This Skip Hop bag has it all! Not only is it a chic and functional diaper backpack with ten pockets, but it also includes a matching clip-on wristlet pouch, sanitizer holder, pacifier pocket, changing pad, and removable stroller straps.

Lambert Vegan Leather Diaper Backpack

Lambert Vegan Leather Diaper Backpack ($190)

This unisex vegan leather diaper backpack comes in various colors, including black, brown, and blue. It also comes with a changing pad. The bag can be worn as a backpack with adjustable straps or on the stroller with two mini straps provided. Additionally, there are multiple interior and exterior pockets to help you stay organized and find exactly what you need with ease.

Itzy Ritzy Vegan Leather Diaper Backpack

Itzy Ritzy Vegan Leather Diaper Backpack ($160)

With 17 total pockets, Itzy Ritzy’s Boss Backpack Diaper Bag comes with the most interior and exterior pockets I’ve seen on a diaper bag. If you’ve been looking for a diaper backpack bag with insulated bottle pockets, then this one is a great pick! It also includes a changing pad. All styles and colors seem to be made from synthetic and vegan materials except for the Coffee & Cream color, which contains 2% wool.

Vegan Leather Diaper Bags

Prefer a tote-style diaper bag instead? Here are some vegan leather diaper bags that you can easily clip on a stroller or carry by the handle or on your shoulder.

Denise Roobol XL Shopper

Denise Roobol XL Shopper (€180)

Denise Roobol’s XL Shopper was designed to be a diaper bag, weekender, and laptop bag in one. The bag contains several compartments to keep your’s and baby’s essentials organized and easy to find. The long nylon strap allows you to also hang the diaper bag on your stroller.

Sans Beast Daytripper Tote

Sans Beast Daytripper Tote ($349)

Available in Black or Mahogany, this generously sized tote bag by Sans Beast will fit all of your daily essentials. Made from recycled vegan Eco PU (the fabric is Global Recycled Standard certified, water-based, and solvent-free). The large vegan tote bag is an excellent option for a diaper bag with its many internal and external compartments and adjustable shoulder straps. It also comes with a detachable strap, so you have the option to wear the tote as a crossbody.

The bag also features two front pockets with magnetic snap closures and a couple of compartments inside to stay organized. Interior lining is made from 100% recycled water bottles.

Mina Baie Vegan Diaper Bag

Mina Baie Vegan Diaper Bag ($189)

Although not a 100% vegan handbag brand, Mina Baie makes functional and chic diaper bags, and they have some styles available in vegan leather. I like the style and functionality of their Emmy convertible diaper bag! It can be converted from a handheld bag to a shoulder bag to a backpack, and it features several internal compartments with large elastic pockets. It’s also available in multiple colors; make sure you pick the microfiber vegan leather material.

The contrasting signature Stella McCartney logo straps provide ease of carrying, and it also features a zip closure with internal and external pockets to keep you organized.

Jeane & Jax Vegan Diaper Backpack

Jeane & Jax Vegan Diaper Backpack ($150)

This black unisex vegan diaper backpack is made with nylon and the lining is made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. The backpack includes a changing pad and features an insulated side zip-around pocket and another side pocket to store baby wipes. The shoulder straps are adjustable and padded. And it also comes with adjustable stroller attachment clips.

Sustainable Vegan Diaper Bags

If you’re looking for a vegan and sustainable diaper bag, I’d suggest buying second-hand! There are lots of options on Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist. I’ve seen many listings in my area from brands like Freshly Picked, Fawn Design, Itzy Ritzy, and Skip Hop that advertise their diaper bags as made from vegan or faux leather. And because we’re all not going out as much, some are still in excellent condition.

Or use what you already own! I plan to use my Matt & Nat Brave Backpack. It may not come with interior compartments or an insulated pocket for bottles, but it’ll do the job for now.

Let me know which of these vegan leather diaper bags or backpack you like the most!

Are Lulus “Vegan Shoes” Actually Vegan? https://ethicalelephant.com/is-lulus-vegan/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=is-lulus-vegan https://ethicalelephant.com/is-lulus-vegan/#respond Thu, 29 Oct 2020 10:04:47 +0000 https://ethicalelephant.com/?p=28351 Lulus offers a range of "Vegan Shoes" but they missed one small detail when classifying shoes as vegan.

Are Lulus Shoes Vegan?

I’ve been a fan of Lulus for years. In fact, I bought the dress and shoes I wore to my brother’s wedding in 2016 from Lulus. And since the start of my blog, I’ve promoted and recommended countless Lulus vegan shoes, vegan leather jackets, and their stylish handbags in several of my shopping guides.

I really loved that Lulus offered a great range of fashionable yet affordable vegan options made without animal materials.

However, a couple of readers have messaged me asking whether the glues in Lulus so-called “vegan” shoes were made with animal-based glues. This was something I never really thought about before.

It turns out that although most shoe glues used today are made from synthetic and non-animal sources, but there’s no guarantee that all shoe manufacturers are currently using the synthetic option instead of animal-based glues.

Lulus offers many 'vegan shoes' but are they really vegan?

Is Lulus Vegan?

So, this led me to ask whether Lulus uses non-animal-based glues in their “vegan” shoes. I asked the brand and they responded by saying,

“Many of our items are made specially for Lulus by private label manufacturers, so we don’t have an ingredient list to share for the shoe glues being used. However, I do want to reassure you that we take care in ensuring our products are vegan before we label them as having “All vegan friendly, man made materials.” Additionally, it’s now common practice in the industry to use synthetic shoe glues.”

Based on Lulus response, it doesn’t seem like Lulus has gone through the process of verifying or making sure the glues used to make their “‘vegan shoes” are non-animal-based and actually vegan.

They state that they take care of ensuring the products they label as vegan are made from all vegan-friendly, man-made materials. But this only implies the materials and fabrics used are vegan, such as non-animal-derived leather, suede, fur, wool, silk, etc.

I have emailed over 100 mainstream shoe brands (so far) and some of them were able to confidently and reassuringly respond back to me stating their glues are not animal-based.

So, it’s disappointing that Lulus is unable to guarantee or claim the glues used in their “vegan shoes” are non-animal-based.

Since Lulus is unable to confirm its glues are vegan, this alone may be a deal-breaker for many vegans. And for others, the glue may be a non-issue as some consumers are only concerned with whether shoes are made with vegan leather and fabrics.

It’s up to you whether or not you would consider Lulus products to be vegan or not, but I wanted to share the information and response that was provided to me.

Is Lulus Ethical?

It should also be noted that Lulus scored very poorly on the Good On You app and was rated as ‘We Avoid’. The reason being, “Lulus provides insufficient relevant information about how it reduces its impact on people, the planet or animals.”

Lulus rated 'we avoid' by Good On You.
Lulus Rating on Good On You

In addition, I wasn’t able to find any information on Lulus’ sustainability or social practices. Although I think it’s great to see the company offering a range of vegan products, but due to their lack of transparency and information on their ethical practices, I have chosen to no longer promote or recommend Lulus on my blog. (Note: you may see Lulus mentioned in my older posts)

I think there are so many other amazing ethical and vegan alternatives available on the market today that there’s no reason to continue to support or buy from companies that refuse to address these important issues.

Vegan Alternatives to Lulus:

I would recommend the following affordable and fashionable vegan footwear brands to Lulus:
