If you don’t like ‘tested on animals’ then maybe you could accept ‘tested on prisoners’ or ‘tested on young offenders’?

Times are slowly changing young people want a simple life and cruelty towards all animals is not going to be tolerated

If cover girl could do this; why are more companies not following suit?

If they’re marketing that moisturizer with SPF with a “functional claim” like it’s a sunscreen cream and it will protect your skin from the sun’s damaging rays — then it should definitely be considered a “Special Use Cosmetics” and will require animal testing according to China’s animal testing laws.

Hm.. I’m not exactly sure if the brand rep you spoke with has a clear understanding of China’s animal testing laws as their recent changes do not automatically make all cosmetics sold in China “cruelty-free” now. Brands wanting to export and sell their ordinary cosmetics in China will have to jump through hoops in order to be able to qualify for an exemption to their animal testing requirements. If you’d like me to examine and look into the brand’s cruelty-free claims, feel free to email me anytime! =)

I’ve used a brand for years (as a therapist & a consumer) that now retails in China. I stopped using & recommending them as a result. They are now advertising that it is no longer mandatory so they are effectively cruelty free once more but if some of their products contain SPF I’m thinking they would not be exempt?

Even when making information requests at cosmetic stores, the full disclosure is rarely made.
Sadly unless that information is available, bad choices will continue to be made.
This is the type of superb post that needs to be seen by many more people.

excellent and well researched post. After nearly 30 years in the cosmetics business it’s rare to see such clarity on, what is, such a complex matter.

I think the fact that China is ostensibly the only country that explicitly allows or even possibly encourages animal testing is still a huge difference, and why I don’t agree with My Beauty Bunny and no longer trust that site as a source. I can’t find it now but I also could’ve sworn I read somewhere that before selling in mainland Chinese stores brands have to sign an agreement and pay money upfront for their products to be tested on animals, or perhaps that’s only in the event of post-market testing. Regardless I feel like that’s a huge cry from government regulators, researchers, or suppliers (in the case of EU REACH regulations) in other countries testing a brand’s products on animals without their knowledge.

Hi Molly, Thanks so much for the feedback! I totally see now, how my post sounds like I meant Taiwan was part of China. I only included the note about Taiwan because I get a lot of DMs and emails from cruelty-free consumers concerned that a brand is selling in Taiwan and thinking it’s part of China. But it sounded like I was implying Taiwan is part of China but not mainland China. So, I’ve made some changes to provide some clarification, and thank you for sending the link from HSI about Taiwan’s ban on cosmetics animal testing. I’ve included the link as well! =)
