In addition, some deodorants may contain ingredients derived from animal sources like animal-based stearic acid, glycine, and royal jelly. What To Look For:

Unfortunately, most drugstore and high-end mascara are from brands that DO test on animals, like Lancome, Benefit, L’Oreal, Mac, Clinique, Maybelline, Chanel, Dior, and Bobbi Brown. And should be avoided when shopping for cruelty-free mascara.

In addition, most mascara formulas are not vegan. Some contain some animal-derived ingredients or by-products. For example, common animal ingredients found in mascara include beeswax and honey, as well as animal-based stearic acid, glycerin, elastin, and keratin.

There are plant-based and synthetic alternatives to animal-derived ingredients. But it’s sometimes difficult to know with certainty whether a product is vegan just by reading the ingredient list.

All of the vegan mascara listed in this post have been verified as being both cruelty-free (not tested on animals) and vegan (free from animal ingredients).

Note that I’ve included some options that are from cruelty-free brands that are owned by an animal-tested parent company. If you choose NOT to support those brands, you should avoid the ones marked with a *.

Here is an updated list of cruelty-free and vegan nail polish brands. Whether you prefer a nude, neon, glossy, shimmery, or matte finish, there’s something for you on this list!

Cruelty-Free & Vegan Nail Polish Brands

About This List: What started as only 40 vegan nail polish brands back in 2015 and then doubled to 80 brands by 2022, this list has seen many brands come and go. In its latest update, I’ve decided only to include brands that have been transparent about their ethical mica sourcing policy. As a result, I have removed over 20 brands due to their lack of response or clarification on where/how their mica is ethically sourced without child or forced labor.

All of the nail polish brands mentioned above are from brands that have been verified as being truly cruelty-free and don’t test on animals.

And all of these cruelty-free nail polish brands offer at least one or more vegan-friendly nail polish that doesn’t contain any animal-derived ingredients.

Most of these brands are entirely 100% vegan, and if not, then I made sure only to include brands that offer at least one or more vegan nail polish products. Brands not marked as “100% Vegan” may carry other nail care or cosmetic products (like cuticle oils, remover, lipsticks, eyeshadow palettes, and skincare) that may not be vegan.

Always check the manufacturer’s website for the most up-to-date information, as ingredients and formulations may change.

Now, you may be asking, what makes traditional nail polish not vegan.

Why is Nail Polish Not Vegan?

Some non-vegan and animal ingredients used in nail polish are guanine, which is derived from fish scales and used in shimmery nail polish colors; keratin and biotin used as a nail strengthener; and shellac, which is produced from the lac bug and commonly used as a high-shine hardener.

Vegan nail polish does not contain any animal-derived ingredients or by-products.

What is Cruelty-Free Nail Polish?

In addition to avoiding animal ingredients, we also want to ensure we’re not supporting or buying from any nail polish brands that allow their products or ingredients to be tested on animals. Unfortunately, most drugstore and high-end nail polishes are from brands that still test on animals.

For example, nail polish brands that are NOT cruelty-free include OPI, CND, Revlon, L’Oreal, Sinful Colors, Chanel, Gucci, Givenchy, Dior, Tom Ford, and Christian Louboutin.

A note on Sally Hansen and Essie, both these brands have started advertising some of their nail polish as ‘Vegan.’ However, I could not get a clear answer from Sally Hansen or Essie on whether they test on animals or not, which is why they’re on my Grey Area brands list.

In this cruelty-free toothpaste guide, I’m sharing some of the best vegan toothpaste brands; whether you prefer fluoride-free, or with fluoride, for sensitive teeth, or whitening toothpaste, there’s something for you in this list!

What To Look For:

Let’s first begin by asking, is toothpaste vegan? Some toothpaste contains animal-based glycerin, calcium phosphate derived from ground animal bones, or propolis derived from bees.

These can now be made synthetically or from naturally-derived plant sources. But make sure to check the ingredient lists, and unless it’s clearly stated all ingredients are from plant or synthetic sources, don’t assume they’re vegan.

In addition, most drugstore toothpastes are from brands that still test on animals like Crest, Colgate, Sensodyne, Arm & Hammer, Aquafresh, Biotene, and Spry, and should be avoided when looking for cruelty-free and vegan toothpaste.

With so many cruelty-free toothpaste options available, it can be difficult to find one that works best for you.

Over the years, I have received lots of requests for vegan toothpaste with fluoride, so here are some options:

Tom’s of Maine Fluoride Toothpaste* – Tom’s has the most options and flavors for vegan fluoride toothpaste. They also have travel-size toothpaste available too. Some of their fluoride options are ADA-approved, check the packaging to see which ones are. All of Tom’s toothpaste are vegan with the exception of Propolis & Myrrh toothpaste and Peppermint Fluoride-Free Botanically Bright Toothpaste. 

Hello Fluoride Toothpaste* – ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste made with naturally-derived flavors. Available in adult and kids flavors. Hello’s vegan fluoride toothpaste is a great option that you can get at most retailers, including Target and Walmart. 

JASON Anti-Cavity with Fluoride Toothpaste – Available in two fluoride options: SeaFresh Strengthening Gel and PowerSmile Whitening Gel. Both are SLS-Free and Gluten-Free. Available at most drugstores. 

Kiss My Face Fluoride Toothpaste – All Kiss My Face toothpaste are vegan, and they have two options with fluoride: Enamel Xtra Cool Mint and Whitening Cool Mint Gel. Both of which are SLS-free and triclosan-free. Kiss My Face toothpaste can be found at most drugstores and natural health food stores. 

Cruelty-Free & Vegan Sensitivity Toothpaste

Got sensitive teeth? And looking for a cruelty-free and vegan alternative to Sensodyne? Try these options instead!

Cruelty-Free Toothpaste FAQ

Is Crest Toothpaste Cruelty-Free? No. Crest toothpaste is NOT cruelty-free. Crest allows its products to be tested on animals when required by law.

Is Crest Toothpaste Vegan? No. Crest is also NOT vegan. Crest claims some of its toothpaste is free of glycerin and does not contain animal by-products. However, since we do not consider Crest to be cruelty-free as their products are tested on animals when required by law, we also wouldn’t consider anything sold or manufactured by Crest to be vegan.

Is Tom’s Toothpaste Vegan and Cruelty-Free? Tom’s of Maine is a *cruelty-free brand but not an entirely vegan brand. Tom’s confirms its glycerin is from plant sources. Only some of Tom’s toothpaste is vegan, check the labels before buying. *However it should be noted that Tom’s of Maine is owned by Colgate, a parent company that is NOT cruelty-free.

Is Colgate Toothpaste Vegan? No. Colgate is NOT vegan. Colgate claims to offer some “vegan” options that are free of animal-derived ingredients, but Colgate engages in animal testing in some capacity, so we wouldn’t consider any Colgate products vegan at this time.

Is Sensodyne Toothpaste Vegan? No. Sensodyne is NOT vegan. Sensodyne claims some of its toothpaste is “vegan” and does not contain animal products or animal-derived products, but because Sensodyne engages in animal testing, we wouldn’t classify anything sold or produced by Sensodyne to be vegan.

Are all Hello Toothpaste Vegan? Hello is a *cruelty-free and vegan brand. All of Hello’s products, including their toothpaste are vegan and do not contain any animal-derived ingredients or by-products. *However it should be noted that Hello is owned by Colgate, a parent company that is NOT cruelty-free.

Natural Makeup Brushes Are Hurting Animals

‘Natural’ bristle makeup brushes are made from animal hair. The type of animals used vary and can consist of goat, pony, squirrel, badger, and horsehair.

Brands selling natural bristle brushes claim it’s “cruelty-free,” in which the process of obtaining the animal hair doesn’t hurt or harm the animals. The problem is there are no animal welfare laws or regulations protecting how fur-bearing animals are treated or housed to make our makeup brushes. So that means we have to trust the very same people trying to sell us their products. And take their word for it when they claim animals weren’t harmed.

But if you think about it, there’s no way to humanely capture and cage animals so that we can give them a haircut and “take what we only need.” Animals do not willingly give their hair to us. We take it from them.

What can we do instead? Opt for makeup brushes that are made with synthetic bristles instead. Try to filter out the term “cruelty-free” makeup brushes. It means very little when it comes to makeup brushes. Look for the “vegan” label instead. This means the bristles are made from non-animal materials.

Tips on Keeping Your Makeup Brushes as Environmentally-Friendly as Possible

Make Your Makeup Brushes Last

Prolong the life of your makeup brushes by regularly and gently washing them to avoid product and bacteria buildup. Do not submerge the entire brush in water as the glue may come off. And ensure you dry them flat or hang them upside down to dry.

Only Buy What You Need

Resist the need to buy the latest launch of makeup brushes or collaboration just because it’s new. Instead of buying another brush set, consider buying individual brushes of only the ones you know you’ll use.
